8-Augusta

29th May 2008.
A pleasant trip down to Augusta and Turner's Caravan Park which turned out to our best park of the trip so far. Luscious green rolling lawns, plenty of space, absolutely spotless and as we're only approx 50 metres to the water, the outlook from our caravan is beautifull. It's just so spacious and laid back. Watching the pelicans and ducks doing their thing on the water at sunrise and sunset is awesome.

Built on the most South Westerly tip of Australia in 1896, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse beam is visible from a 40 kilometre radius. The lighthouse stands as a solitary sentinel where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet and the views from the top are awesome. The lighthouse has 7 floors and 186 steps and once again, Marlene went all the way up and then had no option but to walk all the way down. Knew this trip was going to help her arthritis and get those muscles and joints working again.

Then went round to the Water Wheel. Originally built out of wood, it has become calcified over the years by the minerals and salts and has now almost turned into limestone. The rocks at the lookout highlight the dangerous coastline for ships.

A drive up to the lookout and along the coastline showed just how rugged the coastline is.

Unfortunately, it's not yet the whale watching season so have missed out on one of our most anticipated tours.

Life On The Road:

Marlene has now discovered that these small towns have really good bakeries and as she loves her croissants and tarts, it's now become a daily ritual. So far, she votes the Augusta Bakery the best. As we're cutting back on the expenses to try and save some money, she's been restricted to one treat a day. Must admit, the pepper steak pie she bought me for lunch today was the best I've ever had. I even had to chew chunks of meat, unbelievable but very tasty. It's what steak pies are supposed to be, as opposed to the mass produced minced pies in the supermarkets today.

One thing we've learn't to be aware of, is a lot of these small towns are not like our capital cities where shops and supermarkets stay open till late. Many of the shops close at 4pm and supermarkets close as early as 5 o'clock. So make sure you do you're shopping before 4pm just to be sure.

Decided to have a rare takeaway last night and went to the local fish and chip shop. Ordered 2 fish and a small chips please!
"What fish would you like mate? We have whitting, herring, flathead, snapper, gummy" etc etc and so the list went on and guaranteed caught fresh today in the bay.
Started chatting to the owner and asked how business was, "in season I'm open till midnight and flatout 7 days a week, this time of year is dead and I usually close between 5:30 to 6:30" so once again, be warned.

Finally managed to buy a small electric heater to warm up the van coz the heating packed up the other night.
