8th August 2008.
Needed an overnight stop on the way to Port Hedland and our camp guide showed a park at Whim Creek, about 125ks south of Port Hedland. Arrive there and no caravan park anymore, but we did notice a few caravans in the carpark at the local pub. Went into the pub to enquire and they tell us we can stay in the carpark, no charge, just have a drink or meal in the pub. So we had a few beers which was a lot cheaper than having to pay site fees in a caravan park.
Early start next morning and headed off to Port Hedland. First three caravan parks full so phone Blackwood Park in South Hedland and they have 2 sites available. "Okay, we'll be there shortly, I'll give you my visa details," - "sorry mate, we don't take bookings, first come 1st served". One of the few times Marlene has told me to hurry up and drive faster. By the time we got there, only one site left so we were in luck.
Port Hedland is basically an iron ore port servicing the mining industry. It also produces and exports salt, but not really much of a tourist centre.
Sorry, but there's nothing exciting to report on our visit here. I needed to get a new anti-sway bar bracket which had fallen off somewhere and fortunately, it arrived overnight.
Fitted it and off to Marble Bar. |
