27th June 2008.
Off to Geraldton, the self proclaimed Lobster capital of the world. Approaching Geraldton, we noticed all the trees were leaning over to the right pretty heavily. In fact, it was quite unnatural the way they were growing, not upwards to the sky like most trees, but horizontall about a metre above the ground. We saw an "information" sign and stopped to learn more. We discovered that as the wind was so strong here, the trees have adapted to the strong winds and now grow horizontally instead of vertically.
Geraldton:
We stayed in Greenough, on the outskirts of Geraldton to avoid the crowds. Fisherman's Wharf, the commercial boat harbour is a hive of activity catering for the multi-million dollar fishing fleet which brings in the delicious lobsters. Geraldton is also the home to the memorial to the lost sailors of the HMAS Sydney II. The consistent winds have earned the city the title of the country's windsurfing capital.
Every lighthouse we've seen so far has been either white or black and white. Something different, a red and white one.
Not much touristy things to see, so we decided to leave the rain behind and head north to hopefully warmer and drier conditions |
