36-Alice Springs to Cairns

31st October 2008.

The trip back to Alice Springs was against strong headwinds and once again, consumption figures went through the roof.

Alice Springs:

Heading back through some of the most desolate country we've seen, the red centre is quite spectacular in it's own way and approaching Alice Springs, The MacDonnell Ranges rise up around us on both sides to welcome us into town. Must see attractions are The Desert Park, Telegraph Station and The Road Transport Hall of Fame.

If you're into art, there are dozens of galleries in town show casing the local Aboriginal artists.

The 270kms round trip out along the West MacDonnell Ranges to Ormiston Gorge and the various other sites along the way is well worth it. The rock formations and colours are different to all the previous ones we've seen and really are awesome.

Alice Springs to Cairns:

The trip through to Cairns involved some long lonely stretches with overnight stops at Tennant Creek, Mt Isa, Hughenden and Cardwell. "Outback at Isa", the award winning visitors centre is an attraction in itself. The underground hospital built during World War II was an eye opener.

Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond, boasts some of the world's most complete and best preserved  fossils and is also a must see. The road from Cloncurry to Richmond is probably one of the roughest tarmac roads we've ever been on and had to slow down a bit as the caravan was being tossed all over the place. Some sections are that bad that even the trucks were driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid the undulations.

Life On The Road:

We've just had confirmation that my sister from South Africa is coming over to spend a few weeks with us, so looking forward to that.

Marlene has been having a bit of trouble with her right leg over the past few weeks so took her to the local physio. The physio checked her out and couldn't really find any problems other than no pulse in her feet so suggested she sees a doctor ASAP. To cut a long story short, the doctor ordered full bood tests plus a dopler ultrasound on her legs. Blood tests completed okay but a 3 week wait for the ultrasound so decided to head for Cairns where they could do the ultrasound in a few days. Results from the blood tests were not good:   cholesterol was 9.8 and Blood pressure was 150 over 90, so she's straight onto medication to control things. Poor girl is falling apart.

Hopefully Queensland will be a bit cooler and greener. Still having a ball, but really missing family and friends after 7 months on the road. We have had to drive much longer distances between stops and attractions than we did in WA which has made NT hard work.
