We have been involved in our own businesses most of our working lives and holidays have been very few and far between.
Approaching the ripe young age of 60, we decided we needed a decent break from the hustle and bustle of life.
The constant pressures of being a small business owner/operator, mean't it was very difficult for us to get away . The main problem was that having a very specialised business, it was totally dependant on my varied skills and it would be very hard to find someone with all the necessary skills to replace me.
We were too young to retire, nor could we afford to.
Late in 2007, we decided it was time to have the holiday of a lifetime and to do The Big Trip around Australia while we were young enough and were still able to. We had seen too many people that had always wanted to do it, but kept putting it off untill it was too late. You just don't know what life has in store for you or how long you'll be around.
Research:
We started researching the info we needed on the internet, bought books, magazines and even bought some DVD's.
Some of the main problems we found with them were:
* They weren't comprehensive enough.
* We had to look here, there and everywhere to try to collate the information we needed.
* There wasn't enough info on choosing and buying suitable vehicles and caravans.
* As most of the publications had been around for a while, a lot of the info was quite old and outdated.
* The quality of the DVD's weren't up to the widescreen, high definition and Blue Ray standards expected by todays consumers.
* They only seem to cover all the good rosey bits and not what to be aware of
* What to budget for and what to expect out there.
A New Business Venture:
Not being prepared to leave the business in someone elses hands, we decided to sell our very successfull Duplication and DVD Production company in January 2008 and "Just Do It".
This offered a few big advantages:
* It gave us the freedom to get out of the rat race and do the trip of a lifetime
* It also provided us with the funds to finance the trip
* and wow, what a way to start a new business venture filming and producing our own DVD's.
Our aim is to provide an up todate website and series of DVD's that cover all aspects of our trip, from planning, budgeting, purchasing all the gear and vehicles and then just doing it.
We hope you'll get onboard and share our experiences on our journey Travelling Oz.
